Grand Marnier is a liqueur, first created in 1880 by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle Marnier of the company founded by his family in 1827.
It is a kind of triple sec, made from a blend of cognac, distilled essence of orange and other ingredients.
Grand Marnier contains 40% alcohol. It is brought on the market in different variants in order to drink pure or in cocktails.
The name Grand Marnier was conceived by César Ritz, the famous Parisian hotelier. He came up with that idea when Alexandre let him taste his Curaçao Marnier.
There are several special variants of Grand Marnier....
Grand Marnier Yellow Label, or Cordon Jaune: Yellow Label Grand Marnier is considered the lowest quality and is also the lightest color. It is not cognac, but made from corn-distilled alcohol. Therefore, it is often mixed in cocktails or used to flambé it, like crêpes.
Grand Marnier Red Label or Cordon Rouge: This is the standard grade, which is commonly called "Grand Marnier".
Cuvée Louis-Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle: is made from a special selection of cognacs from the districts of Grande Champagne, Petite Champagne, Borderies, Finnish Bois and Bons Bois. It is long aged in oak barrels. This species is only sold in duty-free shops in Canada and France and beverage wholesalers in Quebec (Canada) and Netherlands. In terms of taste, this version is less sweet than the Cordon Rouge.
Grand Marnier 100: Grand Marnier Cuvee du Centenaire in french, is a first class liquor. It is prepared by 25-year-old cognac. The price accordingly.
Grand Marnier 150: Grand Marnier Cuvee Special Cent Cinquantenaire, is the finest variant and prepared by 50-year-old cognac. This Grand Marnier costs about twice as much as the 100.
Cherry Marnier Grand Marnier based Turkish Morello cherries instead of oranges. Has a lower alcohol content of 24%.
Grand Marnier Quintessence: composed of a mixture of different cognacs from 25 to 100 years old. It also includes double distilled essence of orange. One bottle of this variant comes at around 700 euros and is a collector item.
Besides the known variants, Grand-Marnier launched some special editions on the market, including a Special Reserve Royal Celebration on the occasion of the wedding of Lady Diana Spencer and Charles, Prince of Wales on July 29, 1981.
The company behind Grand Marnier's Societe des Products Marnier Lapostolle. It was founded in 1827 by Jean-Baptiste Lapostolle, whose distiller made fruit liqueurs. The company's next Grand Way Too armagnac and various wines. The company achieved a turnover of around 152 million euros, half of which in the United States in 2015.
In March 2016 the acquisition was announced by the Italian company Campari for 684 million. Campari thus expanding the range of spirits out to the luxury segment.
